While the radioactivity sign is pretty cool, I think everyone must agree that the biohazard symbol is the hands-down winner when it comes to awesome looking signs. The story of the design of this iconic warning sign is pretty interesting actually: In 1966, Dow Chemicals needed to create a new warning sign for their products. Out of several possible designs, this one was scored as being the most memorable, and so it was chosen. I think it’s pretty remarkable that the biological hazard symbol has endured for so long – over forty years and it’s still remembered and people are drawn to it. In fact, the symbol is something of a victim of its own success; apparently the inventor got quite upset when the image was used on a tie, saying that it wasn’t intended to be used on clothes – tell that to the T-shirt vendors I say!
